Losing 2lbs on my return from every Ireland trip is going well so far as on my last trip I was down to 19stone 2lb. However after every weigh-in I go all Ricky Hatton after a fight and have a good old blow out and return to Ireland having to lose much more than the 2lb originally needed.

The way forward is making my own smoothies – just bung loads of fruit and a bit of milk into the blender and you get a delicious and healthy smoothy. So hopefully smoothies and getting back to the gym will turn me into the next Pauline Quirke, Ruth Jones, Dawn French etc. etc.

Quick chubby quiz: Who has let themselves go the most Prince Naseem Hamad or Brazilian Ronaldo?

I reckon Ronaldo but please let me know your opinion?

Anyhoo current calculations mean I should be 16 stone by 18th December 2012 just in time to celebrate with a massive Christmas dinner. Hang on, on the BMI calculator that still makes me overweight with a BMI of 26.6 but hey that’ll do for me.

I have just finished reading a biography of Winston Churchill by Paul Johnson and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a biography that was short, sharp and to the point, which gave the reader a solid insight into Britain’s greatest leader.

Winston Churchill was a larger than life character who was focussed on setting trends rather than seeking out other ones to follow. As a child he was surrounded by wealth and opportunity but was never afforded any praise or encouragement by his father, who quickly dismissed him as not being a particularly intelligent or impressive child. How wrong he was proven to be by his son, who rose to such heights, in spite of never receiving the reassurance every child wants from his father.

Churchill served on the front lines with the British Military as a young army officer, which gave him an invaluable understanding of warfare from an ‘up close and personal’ perspective that proved incredibly useful when he became prime minister in the May of 1940 and had to lead Britain through the darkest days of the 2nd World War. Some of Churchill’s attributes that enabled him to become a greatly respected war-time leader were as follows:

1. He reacted to adversity and personal failure in a defiant and stoic fashion. There were numerous occasions during his political career that Churchill became something of an outlaw and an isolated individual. Churchill was almost exclusively blamed for the failure of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 that ended disastrously in the extensive loss of soldiers’ lives. Churchill received a huge amount of criticism in the wake of the disaster and was ultimately sacked from parliament as a result. Churchill was no doubt extremely distressed by the whole affair but he collected his thoughts, composed himself and ultimately fought his way back into parliament and restored the nation’s faith in his ability to make key decisions. Churchill’s failures and wrong decisions taught him some invaluable lessons: namely that no-one gets every decision right but it is better to play some well thought out strokes off your own bat, than to always wait for others to act first, in order to avoid any retribution.

2. Winston Churchill had incredible conviction in his views and he wasn’t prepared to compromise on that which he believed in, even if it went against everything his colleagues and the electorate were thinking. He had the strength to stand alone and this self-belief often led to his being outlawed. He had the gift of incredible foresight and was thus able to stay ahead of the game. Churchill predicted that there would be a 2nd World War long before many of his contemporaries. Indeed, it was stark refusal to accept the facts that ultimately led to the ousting of Neville Chamberlain as Britain’s Prime Minister in May 1940 whereupon he was replaced by Mr Churchill.

There were many things that I discovered about Winston Churchill when reading this biography that fascinated me about him. He had an incredible appetite for life and a seemingly boundless curiosity. He was a prolific reader and an even more prolific writer who had an intense and passionate love for the English language, which he mastered so magnificently. It is estimated that by the time of his death, Winston Churchill had written between 8 and 10 million published words. He obviously made no friend of procrastination.

That said, he was insistent upon never wasting energy and often quipped that one should never stand up if he could sit down, nor should he ever sit up if he could lie down. This philosophy served Churchill well and helped him lead a long and healthy live of ninety years.

Churchill was also a keen painter who produced over 500 canvasses in his life. Churchill lived a full life and made a habit of good decision making, always coming out on top (even if it meant relentlessly picking himself up off the canvas) and never ever surrendering. He was a leader, a character and a role-model whose example we should all seek to follow.

I just want to give my thoughts on the cancelled rugby match the other day. For those of you who haven’t been following it, Ireland were set to play France last weekend. The players (and, more importantly, the fans) had travelled to Paris and were all set to kick off – ten minutes before kick off the match was cancelled due to the condition of the pitch.

Now not many things make me cross, but this had my blood boiling. The cynical among you will say that it is because I felt REALLY good about my Ireland + 10 bet. I promise you that it is not for that reason. Even though Ireland are now available at best price of + 8. It really isn’t that at all.

I just feel so, so sorry for those poor, poor fans who travelled all the way there. They took the time to travel there, time away from their families; they paid for the tickets and the flights; they got all excited about the game… only to have it snatched away from the TEN MINUTES before the off.

The way it was handled was a disgrace. How could the authorities not have known any earlier that the pitch wasn’t going to be suitable? Surely an international rugby pitch should have undersoil heating (rather than just pumping warm air in under a cover)?

The Captain is not amused. Come on lads – let’s not let this happen again.

The Cheltenham festival is inching ever closer and at the moment punters are afraid to miss a race lest they miss a valuable clue in the festival jigsaw .The latest Cheltenham star to put his credentials on the line is our great Ryanair hope Rubi Light, who lines up in the featured chase on Gowran’s Red Mills day on Saturday (2.05) . He should win for Andrew Lynch but he won’t have it all his own way with that consistent performer Apt Approach and last year’s four mile chase winner at Cheltenham,Chicago Grey, in opposition. Quite a race and if you fancy Rubi for Chelter’s the value option is probably to take the Ryanair price before he lines up in this race.

The Willie Mullins trained Zaidpour looks a penalty kick in the Red Mills Hurdle at 3.15 .Indeed he is rated 18lbs superior to the remainder of the field on official ratings. He probably wants further but should take this en route to fulfilling an engagement at the Festival ,most likely the World Hurdle.

Racing opens with the Beginner’s Chase (1.35) a race where J.P’s Ballyburke has a chance as does the frustrating but talented Dante’s King, who will need to be kidded home by Davy Condon. Watch also for Terry O’Brien’s long absent Ballyadam Brook ,the mount of Townend, who was a classy novice hurdler a few years back and if anywhere near his best could conceivably be a player here.

The two and a quarter mile handicap at 2.40 affords a nice opportunity for the quirky Oscar Dan Dan to follow up on a recent Navan success. He regularly ran off 150 over timber and a mark of 128 here over fences seems more than fair. Tom Nagle’s The Sneezer bids for a third course success in this race while Arkendale, who came from the clouds at Leopardstown a few weeks back, is a possible play option in the place markets.

Eoin Doyle’s Around The Clock belied his odds of 33-1 at Limerick on his debut in this country when running on to finish second to the Byrne’s trained Arnaud. His chances are obvious in today’s four year old hurdle today (3.50). Others to consider in this race could be Gordon’s ex Cumani horse Cause Of Causes and a horse that showed smart form in France for Alain Du Royer Dupre,Shamar. Now domiciled at Closutton with Willie Mullins, Shamar holds a tentative entry in the Triumph Hurdle and is one to monitor closely in the betting, a remark that can also be applied to the ex Coolmore horse Enchanted Forest .

Michael Barry’s Colls Corner was hit with a draconian ten pounds for winning at Naas last week and may find life difficult in the handicap hurdle at 4.25. Mike Hourigan’s Cloughmile won around here over fences before Christmas and off a ten pound lower mark over hurdles could be a player here. King’s Canyon has his first run for John Hanlon today after the transfer from Nicky Richards yard, while if J.P’s Up For The Match has any ability at all he could be absolutely shovelled in off 95 today. Running in it’s first handicap after three runs in maiden races, it’s been quite some time since trainer John Kiely has had one running off such a lowly mark in a handicap hurdle.

Racing concludes with the ‘wooly jumper’ and a pretty competitve looking race it is too. Busty Brown has a chance following a decent third to Our Vinnie at Naas on his latest start .Paul Nolan’s Undone ran a respectable fourth on his racecourse debut at Punchestown in a race won by Joxer ,while Way Up In The Air was an expensive failure at Limerick over Christmas and in receipt of the mares allowance today represents a live threat to all .

Enjoy the racing at Gowran this Saturday and don’t forget to call us here at Star Spreads where our experienced team will talk you through the wide range of markets available to you on a multitude of sporting events. Remember Cheltenham is closing in fast and it might just be the time to open that Star Spreads account .Call us now on 1800 624 624,you won’t be disappointed !!

I attended my first Cheltenham preview evening last night in the Templemore Arms Hotel in County Tipperary. Star will be sponsoring many more of these previews over the next month, both in the UK and in Ireland, as punters look to get an edge on us lowly bookmakers come Gold Cup time.

We had a brilliant panel lined up last night in the form of Davy Russell, Robbie Power, Andrew Lynch, Shark Hanlon and Robert Hall of RTE, Dave Keenan and our very own Donal McCarthy. The MC of the night was Denis Kirwan who did a great job on the night. Davy Russell is notoriously good value on nights like this and I was very much looking forward to his war of words with the very entertaining Shark Hanlon.

We sat and had a bit of grub and a cheeky drink with the jockeys and trainers, and then it was down to business; the paying customers wanted to get in the inside info for Cheltenham!

Both Davy and Andrew came on to say that they feel Peddlers Cross will outstay Sprinter Sacre in the arkle, and unsurprisingly there was resounding support for Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle (We were generous enough to offer evens about Hurricane Fly to all in attendance – Best industry price!)

After all of the Hurricane mull had ended, the jockeys gave us all an indication of which horses they would be riding at the festival. Robbie “Puppy” Power stated that he would more than likely be on Big Zeb, who was demolished by Sizing Europe in the Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown two weeks ago. Sizing Europe is the clear favourite for this year’s Queen Mother Champion chase at 11/10 with Big Zeb at 13/2.

As far as the Ryanair Chase was concerned, much of the focus was on Rubi Light, who most believed was a massive price given its ability. Shark Hanlon made the point that if Paul Nicholls or Willie Mullins had Rubi Light he’d be 2/1 for the Ryanair – notepads were out in an instant for that one, you can get 15/2 in places… Value!

The long-awaited debate between Shark and Davy came as we approached the Triumph Hurdle, much to the delight of the audience. Shark stated that Minsk was the Irish banker of the festival and after a win at Fairyhouse it would shorten dramatically. Davy then pitched in and said that he knew “for a fact” that Minsk was lame this year and had no chance at Cheltenham. Interestingly, a couple of members of the panel put up Daroun of Mullins’ camp as a bit of value at 20’s.

It was then time for the biggun’, the Gold Cup, and everyone sat up in their chairs. Shark, who is never one to sit on the fence, ruled out Quel Esprit from the outset. The general consensus was that Long Run will get the win, as Kauto had had too tough a season to beat it. But based on Long Run’s narrow victory at Newbury on Friday, opinions may have changed now. Power feels that this year’s race could well be won by a 25/1 shot and that an upset is long overdue. He tipped 25/1 shot Burton Port as the ante-post value, after performing well at Henderson’s yard.

As far as the charity bets were concerned, Russell backed Midnight Chase for the Gold Cup at 16’s, Power backed Steps to Freedom in the Supreme Novices at 9’s, and Andrew Lynch backed Salcify in the Foxhunter at 10’s.

Shark, of no surprise to us, took a different approach. He backed a treble of Hurricane Fly, Long Run, and Minsk, much to the bemusement of Davy Russell!

A very enjoyable evening with the entire panel, and I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot more of the lads over the coming month as we attend many more Cheltenham previews.

Ireland’s only all weather track, Dundalk, once again race this Friday evening with a seven race card featuring a wonderfully eclectic mix of maidens, claimers and extremely difficult to solve handicaps. A few points of order to consider before considering a bet on the card. Low numbers always do well in sprint races here particularly if they can establish an early lead. I know one judge who tells me he makes money by perming the best six drawn in these races in a complicated series of combination forecast and tricast bets.”There’s usually one or two races on the card for me,my bookmaker thinks I’m the greatest lamb of all time, let him always think that way !”

Leading jockeys at the venue include Johnny Murtagh, who makes his return from Dubai, Wayne Lordon, succesful aboard 7-1 chance Indian Scout at the last meeting and Shane Foley who racked up a nice 26-1 double here last Friday evening. Trainers to note include Ger Lyons ,Mick Halford who produced If Per Chance to win at 17-2 here last Friday and genial Eddie Lynam, who rarely leaves the venue empty handed. Incidentally were Eddie to play a part in The Great Escape no prizes for guessing he’d be known as the Claimer King, given his 67% strike rate in these races here at Dundalk.

A few trackfax to add to the equation now. The Paul Deegan three year old handicappers have a 25% strike rate here, a pointer perhaps to the chances of Mr Lando in the seven furlong race at 7.55. Jockey Rory Cleary and trainer Jim Bolger have struck up a profitable relationship here at the track and a 40% strike rate suggests that their entry Heir To The Mint commands respect in the one mile handicap at 6.55.

Veteran trainer Frank Oakes has got a great tune out of Mountain Oaks over the last few years and this eight year looks for a fifth course and distance success in the six furlong handicap at 8.25. Finally, the Harry Rogers trained Solo Performer looks for a sixth track win in the concluding twelve furlong race at 9.20. Any more wins and we might have a life size bronze of the horse commissioned for display in the parade ring !

Enjoy Dundalk tonight and do remember to call us here at Star Spreads on 1800 624 624 where our experienced team will talk you the wide variety of markets available to you on a multitude of sporting events. Perhaps it’s time you considered opening an account, you won’t be disappointed !

Two amazing things have happened in my life over the past 7 days:

I have learnt how to speed read, which means I can read twice as fast as I used to.

I have bought a ‘Kobo’, which is a ‘kindle’ equivalent that enables you to read books in digital form anywhere, anytime and to be able to store thousands of books in your pocket.

My friends and family will know that, only a week ago, I was dead-set against these evil little devices and was all for the retention of the print press, publishing houses and books. It has been one of my long-standing dreams to one day have a library in my own home, where I can drink wine and have long talks with my closest friends, trusted colleagues and confidants.

I have clearly been reading too many books and letting my imagination get away with me. Whilst some people would consider this to be a negative thing, however, I whole-heartedly disagree and the next paragraph explains why.

I think it is very important to have a big imagination and big dreams, so that we are encouraged to work hard and spend every day striving to realise those grand dreams. As Adam Smith (the famous economist) has said, it is very important that people act in their own self-interest, as this will keep the wheels of the greater economy turning.

The free market is and always has been more efficient than the communist/socialist state where intrusive regulations and forced equality disincentivise people from being entrepreneurial and forward thinking. Arnold Palmer (the famous golfer) was also greatly in favour of thinking big and never losing that childish imagination, which makes us believe that anything is possible.

It is too often the case that the process of growing-up stops people thinking in brilliant colour and causes them to start thinking in straight lines – bound by the rigid black & white structure of what we are and are not allowed to do. If we lose the ability to think beyond those straight lines, though, how are we ever going to bring about changes and new ways of thinking/doing things?

It is those people who challenge the status quo and encourage new ways of thinking and doing things that are remembered as pioneers, and a strong imagination is required to bring about such changes.

That said, some traditions/processes are best kept and have lasted many centuries for a reason – they work. Some rebels are pure idiots; in fact the majority are. Very few people are able to combine a strong imagination with cogent and objective thought processes, which enable the outlandish workings of the imagination to be formed into a working plan and then implemented in reality. That is where the real test comes: namely being able to retain a boundless imagination and childish enthusiasm whilst also being able to function in the real world and use dreams to inform practical ways of doing things differently.

The flip side of the argument here, though, is that that we sometimes forget the old adage ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’. Certain old-fashioned traditions, for example, have been lost on people today. How often do you see a young lad give up his seat for a lady or elderly person? How often do you see a gentleman open a door for a lady? How often do you get thanked for doing things?

Manners maketh man and I am afraid to say their practical use has been in decline for some number of years. Good manners and chivalry should be championed above all else and become more (not less) important in the fast-paced world that we now live in.

So it is that in a roundabout way I have tried to make a few points. I will forgive any reader for having missed them but here goes:

Learning to speed read changed my world. I recommend everyone learn – it is not difficult.

Digital e-readers like the ‘kindle’ and ‘kobo’ are great inventions. Having been subjectively opposed to them for months, I was converted the minute I started using one. Genius.

We live in the age of sky television, iPods, computers, DVDs and iPads. Reading is a wonderful and beneficial pursuit in so many ways. It engages the brain, stimulates our faculties and inspires our imaginations. It is easy to vegetate on the couch in front of a crap soap on the telly. Beware of the negative impact this can have on your ability to function and use your brain properly. Long and short of it – read as much and as often as possible.

It is important that we never lose our childish imagination.

He who is able to combine a furtive imagination with the ability to think cogently and objectively possesses a very powerful weapon.

That said, progress should not stand in the way of all traditions, some of which are best kept. Manners and chivalrous acts are premier among such traditions.

Eight races at Leopardstown this Sunday where the Hennessy Gold Cup forms the centerpiece of an exciting card with a scheduled off time at 3.45 .First run in 1987 ,The Hennessy as it now known, has produced some memorable races over the years with the roll call of winners revealing the sheer strength in depth of the race.

Jimmy Fitzgerald’s prolific chaser Forgive N’ Forget was the inaugral winner of the race under Mark Dwyer in ’87 while a jockey, fast approaching the twilight of his career in the saddle, Paul Nicholls, was aboard Playschool the 1988 winner. John Upson’s popular chaser Nick The Brief scored in successive years in 1990 and 1991,while the greatest horse never to win a Cheltenham Gold Cup,Carvills Hill, scored in 1992 under Peter Scudamore having previously won the race in 1989 when in the care of Jim Dreaper.

The mid 90′s belonged to Peter Beaumont’s tough Yorkshire trained chaser Jodami, who racked up three in a row between 1993 and 1995, ridden on each occasion by Mark Dwyer. The 1998 running of the Hennessy is a race that will go down in memory as Danoli’s year. Returning after injury and sent off at 6-1 on his first run over three miles, Danoli saw off Jodami on the run in to return to ecstatic scenes in the parade ring. Sadly Jodami was never to race again after breaking down badly on the run in. Tom Foley and Peter Beaumont both left to ponder the fickleness of National Hunt racing after the Hennessy of 1998.

Dorans Pride scored under Richard Dunwoody in 1998 before Willie Mullins introduced a horse in 1999 who’s name was to become synonymous with the race. Archie O’Leary’s Florida Pearl completed a fabulous hat trick of victories in 1999,2000 and 2001. He missed out for a few years before returning in 2004 to boss his younger rivals into submission and complete a record breaking fourth win in the Hennessy.

Mike Hourigan will never forget Beef Or Salmon ,a horse that ran 51 times for the stable and won three Hennessy’s along the way in 2003, 2006 and 2007. Daryl Jacob went to the front early in 2008 aboard The Listener and was never caught while the Paul Nicholls Neptune Collonges returned home the winner in 2009, twenty years after he rode Playschool to victory in 1989. Paul Nolan’s Joncol kept the prize at home in 2010 while Willie Mullins turned out his seventh winner of the race in 2011 with Kempes, a horse that had won the Ulster Derby on the flat as a three year old.

Seven runners face the starter this year in what looks an open renewal where, with the exception of Treacle, the field are separated by only four pounds on official ratings. Jessica Harrington will fancy her chances with Boston’s Angel a horse who won the RSA at Cheltenham last season. Absent since November, Boston’s Angel appears to go on any ground, has course and distance winning form and hails from a very much in form stable. China Rock is a precocious individual who had been on the sidelines for a while before making a pleasing reappearance over hurdles recently. Oliver McKiernan’s Follow The Plan produced a super performance when taking the Guinness Gold Cup at the Punchestown festival last spring and his latest run at Thurles suggested he is coming back to something near his best. Magnaminity was a smart novice last season and while his comeback run in The Lexus was ordinary do remember he was less than a length off Boston’s Angel in the RSA at Cheltenham.

Quel Espirit may well go off favourite to give Ruby Walsh his first winner of the Hennessy for Willie Mullins, following impressive wins at Naas and Thurles. Robert Goldback didn’t run a bad race in the Lexus behind Synchronised while Treacle would appear to have it do on official ratings .

Good morning to all our Star Spreads customers and a welcome to our exclusive preview of this evening’s all weather card at Dundalk. Eight races in all down for decision ,starting at 5.50 with the six furlong handicap and running all the way through to 9.15 when the card concludes with a fascinating looking one mile conditions event. Racing at Dundalk takes place on a polytrack surface, ten furlongs in circumference, and is a track where traditionally low numbers hold a significant advantage, particularly in races over five and six furlongs where if those drawn near the rails can establish an early an early advantage they can be hard to peg back.

It can also pay to follow jockeys that ride the track well. Jockeys that fit into that category and who have mounts tonight include Wayne Lordon (winner on Kedleston here last Friday),Shane Foley (on duty at Meydan yesterday) and the senior jockey of the weigh room Kevin Manning who scored with a nice double here last Friday evening.

Some trackfax now for your perusal .Jockey Fergal Lynch has established a profitable relationship with trainer David Marnane over the last few meetings, watch for Almaada in the 5.50 and Aragorn Icon in the last at 9.15. Previous course winners are usually worth considering also. Mick Halford’s Lord Kenmare is an honest handicapper who has won four times around this circuit, in fact he has never won anywhere else and has drawn the much sought after two box in tonight’s one mile handicap at 6.50. Andy Oliver’s Mutasareb is another horse who loves his trips down to Dundalk. He’s already racked up four course wins and is no forlorn hope to notch up a fifth in the ten furlong handicap at 7.20. Finally consider the chances of Rocky’s Pride in the 9.15 race. Trained at Garristown by Garvan Donnelly ,he made all under Seamie Heffernan here last week,I wonder will similar tactics be employed tonight ?

Trainers that normally do well here are Ger Lyons (14% at the track) ,Curragh based Michael Halford and Eddie Lynam who rarely leaves here empty handed. Watch also for some of the lesser lights amongst the training ranks. Garvan Donnelly has an admirable 21% strike rate here while Cahir based Michael Byrne, a trainer that has done extremely well with his small team of handicappers, has a profitable three in nine strike rate at the venue.

Enjoy the racing from Dundalk and don’t forget to call us here at Star Spreads where our experienced team will talk you through the wide variety of markets available to you .Match bets, performance indices, winning distances and aggregate S.P’s ,why not have a bet where your judgement really counts ?

Like the scarecrow, they were outstanding in the field but, like the cowardly lion, they never had the bottle to win the bigun.

Jimmy White – We loved him and he was great but in six World Snooker Finals he always came runner up. It was literally a crucible of pressure and it showed in 1992 when he was 14-8 up and lost 18-14 and again in 1994 when at 17 all he missed a routine black. Why oh why.

Colin Montgomery – European order of merit winner from 1993 to 1999 but can’t quite beat Jimmy’s record of six runners up medals as he “only” finished runner up in a major on five occasions. We didn’t love him as much but it would have been good to see him win a major. Is that still a possibility?

Dan Marino – Known for his powerful arm and quick release, Dan Marino is one of the most prolific passers the NFL has ever seen. In his 17 year career with the Miami Dolphins, they reached the playoffs on no fewer than 10 occasions. He became a starter for the Dolphins mid-way through his rookie season, and by the end of his second season he was named NFL MVP, and had set 6 single-season NFL records including 48 touchdown passes, destroying the previous record of 36. At the end of that season he made his first, and only, Superb Owl appearance, losing to the great Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers. Although he would never make it to another Superb Owl, he continued to smash record after record. At the time of his retirement, in 1999, he held almost every major NFL passing record, many of which still stand today, but no Superb Owl ring for this great.

Paula Radcliffe – Has the world record for a ladies’ marathon and four of the five fastest times in history so surely winning an Olympic gold should be as easy as sh*tting in the street. Harsh to include her in this list as she only gets one chance every four years unlike the previously named who get one crack a year or four in Monty’s case. London 2012 gives her another chance to get off this list so fingers (and legs) crossed.

Can’t help but mention Toto Schillaci in a Wizard of Odds list as he is the opposite of these, grabbing his one chance of glory in Italia 90 and scoring 6 of his total 7 international goals to win the World Cup Golden Boot. Anyway there’s no place like home so I’m offski.
